Friction In Your Job Search

Friction In Your Job Search Now dont get all excited that Im going to bash the job search process I know there are plenty of things that stink. Why recruiters dont get back to you, why a job application page doesnt keep you updated on your progress, why salary discussions are so confusing and lame, why job seekers feel so disrespected (like 3rd class citizens). Theres plenty to complain about indeed, this is friction. But that is not in your control what is in your control is the friction you produce the friction you give off.  And thats what I want to talk about, because its keeping you from making progress in your job search. Can you help me find a job? Im open to anything.  That is too vague to many unanswered questions, and leaves me to do the heavy lifting. This is friction in your communication, and my (as someone who should help you) experience. No one wants to help me. This was a sad comment I got from someone in one of my presentations a few years back. Her daughter was there, and she said that no one wanted to help her, either. Friends, family, neighbors, etc.  All were leaving these two out to dry. The problem is that it makes me, as someone who should and could help, wonder whats wrong. Are they bridge burners? Are they offensive? Do they have serious problems that make them repulsive? Even if none of those are true, the simple, sad comment makes me wonder if getting involved with either of these two is going to get me in trouble. Will you look at my resume and tell me what you think? Listen, too many job seekers try this tactic, and I personally find it offensive. Why? Because they dont care what I think. Im not their proofreader, they are trying to get me interested in them and get this resume to the right person. Theres nothing wrong with wanting that, but I feel like they are being deceitful and if they arent completely honest with this request, what else will they be deceitful about?  Simply be honest and say either Im getting ready to send my resume out, and want to make sure its perfect. I know you arent a resume writer, but would you mind taking five minutes to look at this to see if you can find any spelling or grammar errors, or anything out of place?  That is a direct, specific request, and I know what you are after.  But seriously people, if you want more than a spell-check, then ask for what you want, like this: Im looking for my next opportunity, and Id love for you to see if my skills and exp erience can help at your company, or with anyone you know and can introduce me to. Ask for what you want, and dont try to insinuate too much. The way you dress, the way you look. Always a sensitive subject, I know. Who am I to judge how you look?  But realize that humans are very judgmental. Its just the way it is. Im not saying you need to conform you do what you need to do. But if you go to a networking meeting baring your midriff, Im going to have a problem with that. I might find you attractive or repulsive, charming or weird, but the bottom line is, if you dress inappropriately for a networking meeting,  I question your judgement, and if I hired you, my peers would question my judgement.  Im not ready to risk my career on your midriff. Your choice of words and stories. Look, you might like the shock factor. Or you are the funny guy. I get that more than I should. And I might laugh and react the way you want. You tell a joke, and I laugh.  But, what if it is a nervous laugh? What if Im laughing at you, and how audacious you are, not because of what you thought was clever?  I might think of you as someone fun to hang out with on the weekends, but no way would I risk putting you in front of my customers, or changing the culture Ive been building. There are plenty of other things I could list here hiring managers who have hired a lot have seen it all. The point is, identify what your points of friction are, and how you can reduce that friction. Look, I know this is hard. You have to be honest with yourself (without beating yourself up, but enough to be ready for change). You have to implement change in your life, and that can take a while. In JibberJobber we are doing this, and its been a journey of eleven years. Are You Focused on the Right Things, Right Now

Are You Focused on the Right Things, Right Now During a recent coaching session with the CEO of a large company he was complaining about the enormous number of items he was juggling at that moment, and feeling quite overwhelmed with all the plates he was spinning. To be truthful, he was not terribly thrilled when I pointed out that experiencing overwhelm is a choice you make! But, you see it is true. We choose how we feel in every moment. Now that may seem like a tough statement, but it is true. At any given time, we choose our thoughts. We allow overwhelm to build up because we give those thoughts more air time in our heads and this builds up over time to increased overwhelm. We dont like to accept that we choose our thoughts, but we do. Now, that is a subject for another set of articles, but let us just agree that the state of overwhelm is something that we have allowed to build up we have chose to give it the aforementioned air time and it has now built up to something quite disturbing. We are now overwhelmed! As in all cases when overwhelm hits, or indeed any other significant problem, the best approach is to break down all the “stuff”, dismantle it and start to analyze in more detail. The object of this simple exercise is to determine whether we had just accumulated a “bundle” of work or were we indeed focused on the right things. You see we are all guilty of accumulating stuff and adding it to our to do list. We are guilty of allowing others to pass the monkey and then we take on their problems and they become ours! Overwhelm happens when we lose sight of what is important and our mind starts living in the future. What I am suggesting here is a process to manage this overwhelm and regain control. This is such an easy exercise to do, but, guess what? We get too busy to do it, which is pretty insane! So, if you are feeling the same as my client then here is a quick and easy way to check to see if, as the late Stephen Covey, used to say, “you are leaning your ladder against the right wall” So here is the exercise: Make a list of all the items that are causing you overwhelm â€" don’t analyze them, just list them so that you have a complete list of all the “stuff” floating around in your head. What is your vision? This is not an exercise in creating a vision, but is assuming that we have one! So, it is just a quick recap to remind you of the vision. What are the key elements of your strategy? Again, it is just to recap on the 5 or 6 key elements of the strategy. Just the top line, not the detail. What are your goals for this year? This is a quick review of what your top goals are â€" they will be written down somewhere, so it is to remind you of what they are. What are your goals for this month? Obviously these are a subset of you annual goals, but I just want you to recall them again. Of all the items that are causing you overwhelm, which ones relate to your key goals for this month? You then capture those and separate them from the list you created in No 1. You then do an analysis of the items left over and ask yourself the following questions: Why are they on my action list? If they do not relate to my key goals, why am I doing them? If they are items that need to be completed right now, for whatever reason, then the question is â€" should I be doing them, or should someone else deal with it? If someone else, I just delegate. If I am satisfied that I need to do them, then must they be done today, or can they be allocated to a future time. Should these items be on my radar at all, or have they just landed there because “the item seemed like a good idea” at some stage? This exercise, which I learned from a coach of mine many years ago, is a wonderfully simple way to a) make sure that the actions you are taking today are the right ones, and b) reduce that awful sense of overwhelm and “busyness” that hits all of us from time to time. Being focused on the right things ensures a peace of mind that is critical to performing at our best â€" it frees our mind to be creative and efficient. I hope this straightforward exercise will help you to focus on the right things, but I would love to hear if you have any tips that really help you to reduce overwhelm â€" we would all benefit from your experience. So, let’s hear them!

Answering Tell Me About A Conflict Youve Had With A Coworker - Algrim.co

Answering Tell Me About A Conflict You've Had With A Coworker - Algrim.co If an interviewer asks you, “Tell me about a conflict you had with a coworker and how you resolved it” you might be thinking to yourself, “How am I suppose to be answering that?” It can be very difficult to express a poor situation and come out of it with the interviewer impressed. There are two other types of questions the interviewer might ask which are applicable here. The variations would be, “What do you do if you disagree with a coworker?” and “How do you handle a difficult situation with your coworker?” In both situations, you can use the below guide to help answer. The interviewer is looking for a very similar line of thinking. Though you may want to change the question from being past-tense to present-tense. Why Does The Interviewer Ask About Conflict Resolution Interviewers usually ask this question to gauge your experience level working with others. This will be tested more when you are interviewing for leadership or management positions since your communication methods are going to be more stressed. Conflict resolution is a common thing within the workplace. Knowing how to resolve conflicts without burning relationships and causing more working hardship is a serious skill. Interviewers ask you this question to get an idea of where you fit within the spectrum of work experience. What Type Of Interview Question Is This Because this interview question has you describe something situations, that makes it a behavioral interview question. An interview question that isn’t a behavioral one would be considered, “What makes you unique?” An interview such as that isn’t behavioral because it lacks what the STAR (Situation/Task/Action/Result) method aims to solve. Using The STAR Method Will Give You The Structure For The Answer You’ll hear about the STAR method often. STAR stands for Situation/Task, Action, Result. This means that you’ll want to set up the situation that you were in when answering the question, the action that you made (which is the conflict resolution part in this instance) and the result that it had. So with the STAR method, just be sure that your answer contains the following types of topics within your answer. Be sure that you don't spend more than 15-20 seconds on each part of the integrated STAR answer. By having a too long of an answer, it might accidentally indicate some emotional-tie to the previous situation, which could come across unprofessional. The topics you'll want to include are: Situation â€" What was happening before the conflict and during the conflict Action â€" This means what action that you took to resolve the conflict Result â€" This means what result happened from the resolution to the conflict that you took, ideally this means communication Craft Your Situation Around The Job You’re Applying For Be sure that when you’re answering this question, you choose a conflict that speaks to the position that you are applying for. For example, if you have a conflict situation with a coworker from a previous job where your role was the same or similar to the one that you are applying for. That’s because the interviewer is looking for you to explain your teamwork experience when working in the job function you are interviewing for. We’re going to go over some example answers by department so that you can understand how you might express situations from your past that would answer this behavioral interview question correctly and impress the interviewer. 2 Example Answers To Conflict Resolution For The Marketing Department “It was a few days before one of our team projects were due. And there were a few last remaining tasks that we needed to get done as a team. Our team was having difficulty deciding on the next line items to work on. I created my suggestions but it seemed to make my coworker upset. I took them aside, asked them if there was something I did that upset them and how I could change? They responded with the fact that they felt unheard. I mentioned I would make sure that I would give her the floor to speak more. Since then, we’ve worked great together.” “A coworker and I were working on a PPC campaign. We couldn’t find out the results were. We struggled to agree upon what the measurement was. Instead of going to our boss to ask, I asked my coworker to take a risk on my intuition this time and that I would take a risk on hers next time. We agreed, moved forward and ended up succeeding with our campaign.” 2 Example Answers To Conflict Resolution For The Sales Department “A colleague and I were on the road. We had a flight in a few hours but need to see a few more clients. We had difficulty agreeing upon which client we should see before we left. I asked him, is there a reason why you felt strongly about seeing the clients you are proposing? I realized through the conversation that he might have been right. We continued with his plan and had a great few sales meetings!” “A colleague and I were in a sales meeting. I could sense during the meeting that I might have said something that my colleague didn’t like. I could sense some hostility. Afterward, I asked him, “Is there something I can do better in those meetings?” He opened up and told me his feelings. It went well and we ended up continuing to work better together.” 2 Example Answers To Conflict Resolution For The Creative Department “There was a tight deadline approaching for some of our work as a team. My colleague was behind on their work. I was feeling stressed from it and communicated in a poor way at first, asking them to move more quickly. I realized this wasn’t great. I could send their demeanor changing. I went back quickly, apologized and then asked if there was anything I could do to help them. After that, the process went smoothly, we hit our deadline.” “During the team meeting there was a colleague who ended up expressing some frustration with our team process. I wanted to make sure I was part of the solution. So I asked them if there was something we as a team could be doing better. It seemed that getting the floor and asking for their opinion helped. We ended up taking some of the recommendations they made.” 2 Example Answers To Conflict Resolution For The Operations Department “A team was seemingly not able to work well together for some reason. I got the team together and asked them a question: what could we be doing better? By asking this question I was able to figure out what I could offer them back to help do their jobs better. It was effective.” “A colleague that was on a team wasn't as happy as the rest of the team. I felt as though there might have been something that particular employee felt off-put about. So I decided to take them aside and ask them if everything was okay. It happened to be a problem at home vs. a problem at work. I didn’t want them to tell me in too much detail. But I appreciated the effectiveness of simply asking if everything is okay.”

A Hiring Managers Guide to Select the Best Employment Recruiting Agency CareerMetis.com

A Hiring Manager’s Guide to Select the Best Employment Recruiting Agency Head hunter, employment recruiter, hiring firm, employment service, executive search agency, etc. these are the many names of a recruiting firm. There is no need for stats or pie charts to prove that almost the entire world, whether you are an employee or an employer, relies on these firms. They are trustworthy and effective. A candidate relies on them for their efficacy and quality jobs. An employer chooses them for their transparency in the hiring process and bringing a qualified and eligible employee to them.Recruitment firms in this day and age can be called the most valuable part of the employment industry. They are proficient in every sector and give the best results every time. These firms ease the trouble of the hiring team of the company and save them time and energy. Of course, for the candidate to be finally chosen, he or she will have to give an interview at the company but the procedures before that are conducted by an employment recruiter and that benefits the company.T he Advantages of Employment Recruiters1) Saves TimeevalevalHiring an employee can be very time-consuming. It will shorten the time taken for evaluating and selecting a candidate. The recruitment agency can find an employee much faster than your hiring team. The talent pool in their database is vast. They have a network of connections to leverage. Not just that, they have access to systems that helps them locate people with the exact skills that a company is looking for some skills can be hard to find, but not for the recruiting firms.Usually, when a company is looking to hire employees, countless candidates apply and it’s not easy screening all the applications and then selecting one candidate. Recruiting agencies are professionals and experts in finding the right candidate and it takes them less than half the time than the hiring manager in the company. The firms have access to a huge network of connections to leverage and advanced system that helps them locate the right candidate with just the right skill that the company is looking for. With the help of the right recruiting agency, only the candidates fit for your job are referred to the company, which makes saves a lot of time for the hiring manager and other employees of the company.2) High-QualityCandidatesThrough recruitment agencies, the employer only gets to meet the highly qualified candidates, unless they are looking for interns. These firms have access to pre-screened, talented, skillful and referenced candidates only. They will take no time to refer them to your company. They send qualified candidates only after assessing, verifying and crosschecking their details with them. They even interview them based on the company’s requirements. This is their forte and they are experts at evaluating a candidate, so before they refer them for the company, they assess them carefully. After the interview, when they feel they are the right candidate for you, they ask the candidate’s requirement as well so th at their values match the standards of the company, which is all the more perfect.3) Specialist Recruitment KnowledgeA company at many points grows and changes, and the company’s recruitment team may not be equipped and familiar with some complex interviews that have to be conducted at that point. A recruitment agency conducts a hundred interviews daily.evalTheir staff is well-versed, experienced and specialized in recruiting employees in numerous sectors. They for very obvious reasons have detailed knowledge about any job position, they are well aware of the technicality behind it and the exact skills that are required. They can easily spot transferable skills that the company’s in-house recruiting team might fail to notice.4) Focus on Serving the ClientThe best part about choosing a recruiting firm is itsefficiency. Even when it comes to compensation, it is often believed that candidate screening begins after the firm is paid.On the contrary, it begins as soon as they are appo inted. If there is no placement, the recruitment agency won’t be charging any fee for the work done. This can only mean one thing that they are just focused on finding you the right employee. They are genuinely interested in providing you with the best possible candidates. Professionalism and commitment.5) Knowledge of the MarketevalRecruiting agencies to have a dearth of knowledge about all the sectors and fields of the employment industry. They do not require a lot of information about a certain position in the office. They know their job and do it well. They deal with countless clients and candidates every day. Due to this, they gain their knowledge right from the practical world and not through research. This means they understand what the company is looking for in a required field and the exact credentials.evalThis also means that they are able to provide useful insights and sage advice to candidates who are genuinely interested in working for the company. This is a pivotal p art of any recruiting agency which makes them all the more reliable. Even as someone from the company hiring an employee, will get access to the information regarding career and skills expectations, hiring advancements and complexities, trending salary rates and the current trends in the market through the recruiting agencies which a hiring manager would not be able to acquire on her or his own.6) Extended ReachAlthough the agencies are never run short of qualified candidates, they still are on the lookout for good candidates. There are some experienced candidates who are not aware of the right recruiting firms and how they function. There might be some candidates with excellent credentials who are not looking for jobs. These firms address them as passive talent and include them in the list of candidates they already have in their systems. For future references, they keep these potential candidates ready.7) Placement GuaranteesOne of the most important advantages for the companies t o use a recruiting firm is the security of recruitment. These firms offer guarantee periods of the employee. Before they refer the candidate to the company. For many companies, the most important advantage of using a recruitment agency instead of in-house recruiters is that recruitment agencies offer additional security when it comes to new hire retention. All the best recruitment agencies offer guarantee periods. This means that they guarantee you that your new hire will stay at your company for a certain period of time By now, you must have finalized a few agencies. Research them well. How the agency functions arethoroughly based upon itsmanagement and recruiting team. Some agencies that have their bios updated on their website. Their bios speak for their leadership and management. Compare the corporate websites of the agencies.LinkedIn is also a great platform to find information about the agency. Details about their recruiters could also be found on such sites.Dennis Tupper from Eliassen Group says,“If you are recruiting for hard-to-fill skill sets â€" which is most likely why you are engaging an agency â€" you want to find the best candidates. Experienced recruiters have spent years setting up networks of great candidates. These candidates are not found on job boards, as they do not need to post their resumes. You hire the agency recruiter for their network of candidates that no one else can find. That is worth more than acouple of dollars per hour for a contract candidate or the few thousand dollars it may cost on a permanent placement to hire the best agency. Time-to-fill will be less and the candidate quality will be better. Those are the two most important aspects of hire, and you cannot get them without using an experienced recruiter.”2) Every Recruiting Firm Is DifferentThis is a very competitive industry and different agencies have different approaches and business strategies. They all have their unique recruiting methods and have their separate philosophy on talent acquisition which may or may not match with your company’s approach or values. There are some agencies that are all-rounders. They can get you candidates from any given fields. There are some agencies, however, you only deal in a few selected fields. These are niche agencies. They specialize in a particular job type or field. This does not affect their efficacy. This is simply the reach of their expertise. Strong niche agencies have massive networks and histories in the employment industry. They are experts in their recruitment process and researching the demography. They are highly knowledgeable and find you just the right candidate from anywhere.evalWhat you as a hiring manager of the company needs to know that although they do have equal standards, you need to identify the values, goals and work process that aligns with your company standards.3) Test Their Online NetworksThe online presence of an agency carries a lot of weight in the industry. Their reach i n social media and their skill to connect with the potential candidate just shows how successful they are in convincing and interacting with passive talents. The best way to test their command in the virtual world is by following them online and connecting with the recruiters on social media platforms and online portals. Their network strength and audience say it all about their expertise. There are some pointers that can be considered while testing their online networks:Their process and procedure of searching for candidates online.Their level of activity on social media networksIf they are part of any professional associations. Is their contribution to the employment industry valuable? Are they knowledgeable enough to assist you?Whether they have worked for your company before? If yes, how was the experience?Check for any visible postings when you search the agency on Google.Jennifer Brown from PeopleTactics says“Interview the recruiters just as you would a candidate for employment . Ask: Do you have candidates for my position already in your database? How will you find and assess the candidates for my position? How will you keep me up-to-date on the status of candidates? How long will it take to fill the position?” It is highly important that the vision with which the recruitment agency works aligns with the values of the company. How to become a recognized expert -

How to become a recognized expert - No one wants to hire a novice. Its crucial to be able to demonstrate your expertise to land your target job. This can be a challenge, especially if youre transitioning to a new field or applying for a job that can best be described as a reach for you. What can you do to become a recognized expert in your field? Luckily for you, all is not lost, even if youve never considered yourself an expert in the past. Embrace technology as your friend, and you too can be fielding questions from others in your industry as a recognized expert. It will take time and effort, but if you can accomplish your goal, it will be worth it. Follow these steps and youll become a go-to expert in your field. 1. Learn something new. Even if you consider yourself an expert, theres always something new to learn. Especially if you are transitioning to a new career, take advantage of online tools, where youll be able to learn information for free. For example,  Udacity  and  Coursera  offer various types of courses. You can learn everything from how to program code to developing a website or making a robotic car, often for free. Also, dont underestimate  YouTube  as a source of information and knowledge. You can Google just about any topic and find someone who posted a video about it. Social media is swimming with information and insights; dont miss opportunities to use tools such as Twitter and LinkedIn; these are resources to enhance your expertise. Find out about industry conferences and determine if there is a hashtag for events that interest you. Even if you cant attend, if you follow updates from participants, you may learn a lot. Follow industry leaders who are active online or who participate in online forums or groups. 2. Keep on top of salient topics in your profession. If you want to be recognized as an expert, you must know about the hot topics in your industry. What are people discussing in your field? What problems are thought leaders trying to solve? What are the best solutions? If you want people to see you as an expert, its important to insert yourself in these conversationsand to join the conversations, you should first do your research and be clear about your opinions on these issues. 3. Expand your network. You cant demonstrate expertise in a room all by yourself! If you want to be considered a go-to expert, you need to have more contacts and connections. Look around: who in your network would be willing to go to bat for you or refer you for an opportunity? The more people you know who are able to speak about what you know and connect you with jobs or gigs, the better. If you have a close circle of contacts, plan to expand it by attending in-person meetings relating to your industry, volunteering for leadership roles and speaking up. In addition, use social media tools to expand the number of people who know, like and trust you. Join groups on LinkedIn and communities on Facebook and make a point to answer questions and provide resources regarding your expertise. 4. Find a mentor. Even experts have mentors. A mentorespecially someone who is already well-respected in your fieldwill be well positioned to help you grow your reputation. If youre lucky, youll be able to impress someone who is well established in his or her niche who is willing to help shine the light on new talent (you!). 5. Showcase what you know. Once youve built your knowledge base, grown your network and found a mentor, all you need to do is broadcast your expertise to as many people as possible. Luckily for you, there are many easy ways to do just that: a. Use social media tools, such as  LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to share useful news and information relevant to your industry.  Comment on articles and post links to useful information your colleagues will want to know. Be a resource and people are more likely to turn to you for your expertise and insights. b. Publish your own content.  Did you know you can  publish blogs on LinkedIn? If you have an opinion about a topic, write about it and post it online. If youre really enthusiastic about becoming known as an expert, youll create and manage your own website and blog where you regularly author useful, insightful articles. You can  impress others in your field  and attract attention. Get my free white paper:  5 Mistakes Preventing You From Landing a Job This Week   c. Organize online forums. Choose your favorite social media tool. It should be where you enjoy spending your time online and the tool most people in your industry prefer. Invest time and effort in creating a group or forum using that platform. For example, you may wish to start a LinkedIn group. If you prefer Twitter, it may make sense to start a regular Twitter chat. Launch a Facebook Live series. Invite others to join you and keep the conversations interesting and useful. Make sure your forum is a must-see for people in your field. d. Identify thought leaders and make an effort to help them.  Who is delivering keynote speeches at industry conferences? Who heads up industry groups or professional associations in your area? Every leader relies on people to assist and volunteer. Offer to co-moderate a LinkedIn group or volunteer to chair a committee. The more you engage with leaders in your field, the more likely they are to recognize your expertise and share your name with others in the field. When you are able to leverage your knowledge online and in person, it wont matter as much how many years of experience you have: your ability to hone in on important topics and to be a resource for professionals in your industry will trump everything else, and youll be recognized as an expert. Is it easy? No, but if you truly want to be a go-to leader in your field, it is worth it.
